Councils

Finance Council

The Finance Council is established in accordance with the Laws of the Church and exists to assist the pastor, who is the administrator of parish goods (c. 537). At St. John the Baptist, the Finance Council operates under the provisions of the Diocese of Orlando. While distinct from the Pastoral Council, the Finance Council collaborates closely with it and reports directly to the pastor. Its role is strictly advisory and consultative.

Members of the Finance Council are drawn from the parish community and are expected to possess competence in financial matters and civil law. At least one member also serves on the Pastoral Council to ensure coordination between both groups. The Council meets monthly, with the exception of summer months.

The finance council is strictly advisory.

Responsibilities of the Finance Council

  • Review and coordinate the parish annual budget in collaboration with other groups and aligned with the goals established by the Pastoral Council
  • Review quarterly financial reports submitted to the Diocese and formulate the parish’s annual financial report to the community
  • Periodically monitor income and expenditures in relation to the approved budget
  • Review contracts and agreements on behalf of the parish
  • Encourage parish participation in diocesan fundraising initiatives
  • Conduct an annual inventory of parish assets and verify that appropriate insurance coverage is maintained

Pastoral Council

The Pastoral Council is composed of the leaders of the parish’s major ministries, along with several appointed observers. Guided by the Council Chair, the Council meets on the last Tuesday of most months and serves as an advisory body to the Pastor.

In accordance with Canon Law, every parish must have a Pastoral Council. The Church envisions the Council as a unifying structure that enables the faithful to participate more fully in the parish’s mission and life. It is not a ruling body within the parish, but an advisory team.

The responsibilities of the Pastoral Council include:

  • Advising the Pastor on matters that affect the spiritual, educational, social, and financial dimensions of parish life
  • Initiating projects and efforts to strengthen parish life
  • Communicating parish plans, decisions, and calendars of events
  • Encouraging all parishioners to grow in deeper union with Jesus Christ
  • Supporting the ongoing growth of the parish by fostering the orderly transition of volunteers into ministry leadership roles

All parishioners are welcome to attend and observe Council proceedings. Those interested in observing a meeting are kindly asked to contact the Council Chairperson in advance. through the parish office.
