Jesus frequently instructed his followers to care for the poor, such as telling a rich young man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, and by teaching that serving the needy is serving him directly. Key verses include Matthew 25:35-40, where he states that whatever is done for “the least of these” is done for Him, and Luke 14:13-14, where he advises inviting the poor to banquets instead of the wealthy.
