The Anointing of the Sick is more than a prayerful blessing—it is one of the Seven Sacraments instituted by Christ, a sacred encounter with Jesus. Administered through a priest, this sacrament brings Christ’s healing touch to the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of a person’s life.
Christ’s compassion extends to all stages of life—whether young or old, facing illness or emotional struggle. While many associate a priest’s visit with the Last Rites, it is important to know that the Anointing of the Sick is distinct from the Last Rites. The Last Rites, or “viaticum,” is the Eucharist given to the dying as nourishment for their journey into eternity and requires the person to be conscious and able to receive Communion.
The Anointing of the Sick, however, is intended for anyone seriously ill or facing surgery. A priest may administer it as soon as illness arises and as often as needed during an extended illness—typically once per month, or more if the condition worsens. This sacrament brings healing, comfort, and strength, both physically and spiritually.
Parishioners are encouraged to request the Anointing of the Sick by speaking with a priest after Mass or contacting the parish office before a hospital stay or during serious illness.
If you are hospitalized, please ask hospital staff to contact the nearest Catholic Church so a priest can visit.
